O'Neil was a student in high school when she took part in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. The quality of her singing impressed jury, and she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil received high praise by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals as she fell to the lowest 3 and 2 spots respectively. The judges were stunned at this, and advised the audience to vote for contestants like Melissa with the best singing abilities. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she never placed in the third place ever again. The two other performances she gave on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil made it into the final two of the finals of the competition, Werner predicted that the morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
