The father of O'Grady was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents within Wheaton (Illinois) and she was a graduate of the North High School in Wheaton. Her appearances in commercials prior to shifting to Los Angeles in 1986. The first role she had was to model for Montgomery Ward. She also was a part of several commercials. She first appeared on screen in 1988 in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby.
